Brickhouse Talk Speaks At Hayward CA Bret Harte Middle School “Career Day”

Whitney Houston sang it best: “I believe the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way…” Brickhouse Talk Production had the privilege of being invited to be one of the presenters for Bret Harte Middle School’s Career Day. We spoke to 3 classes/approx 75 students. Career Day is an event that encourages young ones to begin thinking about what they might want to be when they grow up. It provides them the opportunity to meet professionals from an array of industries who will draw attention to future job possibilities.

I along with Brickhouse Talk’s CEO Ramonda Cutrer and Fashion Stylist Erika Palega willingly shared our personal insights, education, fundamentals and skills required to enter the work world. The school provided each student a worksheet to list presenters, take notes and later send a Thank You letter. We had a wonderful time interacting with the students via Q & A to see what their thoughts were as they contemplate planning for the near future. We encouraged them to become aware of their strengths and weaknesses and we explained the importance of exploring their interests career-wise, understanding that they may have a few jobs before settling into a career position. We briefly touched on the level of education, skills and responsibilities needed for a variety of positions like Journalism, Telecommunication, Executive Assistants or Fashion Stylist. We emphasized the need to show their value/worth on a job application, resume, or at a job interview when making career moves. Then with the use of our giant show n’ tell poster boards we shared with them the importance of confidence (believe in self, eye-contact, firm handshake), the do’s and don’ts of dressing for success (proper attire, hair and make-up) and interview etiquette (be on time, posture/sit up straight, listen).

The kids were very involved and had many questions. We met a few students with talents in poetry writing, sports and other community involvements or interests. They really seemed to enjoy talking to us as much as we enjoyed talking with them. Even the teachers listened and participated in Q & A. We were happy to be able to give the students a few tools to remember and use as they plan for their future, college and the work world ahead. Career Day is very beneficial for the kids. We ended each class with a quiz and handed the winners Starbucks or Jamba Juice gift cards. It was a very productive day. It’s essential for parents, both Mothers and Fathers to get involved in making your children future as bright as it can be and encourage them to DREAM.

Thank you Bret Harte Middle School for the invitation.
