This program was founded in 1998 by individuals who live within the community. Collectively, our Board members, coordinators, and coaches have over 100 years of community service.
This program helps young people through the often difficult transitions from grade school to junior high/middle school to high school. These children are comprised of individuals from various schools and recreation centers throughout the Oakland and Alameda communities. These young people are given a chance to show their talents as well as learn new skills. Our organization targets individuals ages 5-15.
Each person in our program is required to maintain a grade point average (GPA) of 2.0. progress reports are also done on a weekly/bi-weekly basis. If a child is having problems in certain areas in school, we screen other football players/cheerleaders and put them in, what we call, a “buddy system” to help them with their work. By having such a “buddy system,” this enables everyone to get involved and help one another.
The Warriors have set up a tutoring program to help those individuals maintain the required 2.0 GPA as well as obtain a higher GPA. The tutoring program will be from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., not only for the participants of the Warriors, but for the entire community of Oakland, in conjunction with Arroyo Recreational Center.
On days in which the Warriors will practice, the team will conduct its tutoring program at Arroyo Recreational Center from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. exclusively for Warriors participants which are in additional need of help academically. The Warriors will provide tutors in conjunction with the City of Oakland, the Oakland Unified School District, and the University of Berkeley.
All coaches are NYSCA certified. These individuals attend yearly coaching clinics which are sponsored by NYSCA. All coaches are required to provide their NYSCA coaching card when required to do so. All coaches, as well as Board members, are required to have a background check done of them as well as have a fingerprint card on file.
