“The Closer” Dallas Mavericks Dirk Nowitzki

The Boston Celtics  sustained a home loss against the Dallas Mavericks 90-85 Wednesday night. Boston’s second loss  since winning four in a row. This game started off at very pace. The Celtics starting 5 were back on the floor but didn’t have an answer to the Mavericks offense. Rajon Rondo worked aggressively pushing the ball down the court to try and spark  a flame in their what seemed to be cold offense. The Celtics  misfired on ten of their first 11 shots and didn’t began to show life until the second half while Dallas led 23-15 after one quarter as 8 of the Mavericks players scored in the opening period with a 10-2 advantage midway through the first quarter. Celtics allowed Dallas to take advantage of every second shot opportunity which was definitely a factor in the loss.

Rondo deposited 24 points, 3 rebounds and 7 assist in tonight’s game. Garnett was the only other Celtics player to reach double digits, scoring 16 points and 10 rebounds. Allen finished with nine points and Pierce scored only seven points for the Celtics. Paul Pierce who’s infamous for providing a clutch shot when needed, with 25 seconds left to play in the 4th quarter he hit a 3 pointer to tie the game 85-85. But with 5.1 the Mavericks placed the ball in the hands of their MVP Dirk Nowitzki who sent a message back to Boston by shaking his defender Kevin Garnett and taking it straight to the basket for two plus one due to being fouled by Brandon Bass. Boston’s attempt to send the game into overtime was expelled due to a bad pass from Rondo to Allen.

Jason Terry who lead the Mavericks with 18 pts off the bench commented at half time that the Celtics were playing old and fatigued. The Mavericks certainly controlled the pace of the game but what about the saying “Age ain’t nothing but a number” Could the age old saying not apply to the Boston Celtics? With younger, athletic players on the roster  such as Pietrus, Bass, Dooling and Bradley this makes for a more vibrant Boston team. Collectively they contributed 27 of Boston’s 85 points. These 4 players are a great assets to the team and are well respected by the veteran team members. The Celtics were just out played by the Mavericks. Dirk Nowitzki provided 16 pts, 7 rebounds and 4 assist and while Shawn Marion closely followed lead with  15 pts, 7 rebounds and 2 assists.

“I grew into those moments, “At first when I got in this league I wasn’t really the player that I am now.” quoted Dirk Nowitzki
